Fabrications and Ballet Hair

I had alot of fun this week, diving headlong into my fabric stash and coming up covered in more than a few threads, finding a few pieces of long lost fabric, marvelling at what on earth I could have been thinking when I bought some and ending up at the end of it all with a big smile in my face, clutching some real gems - collected from all over the world, some old, some new all fabricationally fabulous! Also Ballet season is back and with that comes some more ballet hair. A simple take on side buns. I started with low piggies that sit just on top of the ear - I find these super cute for messy piggies and they also work well for buns.

Start with a middle part with a t-part at the front as shown. Make two low piggies.

And then take the two front sections and make a small braid and pop the piggies inot ballet buns. More detailed instructions for that can be found here.


Once they are all pinned up, criss cross the braids at the front, wind them around the bun and pin them into place.


Add some bows and fluff and voila - cute side buns with a twist!


This parting also works well for the everyday - shown here with messy piggies with the braids pulled straight back rather than crossed over. The braid looped in with the messy piggies is particularly cute.

Fairy Twinkletoes - the party!

What a day!!! Hettie's party has come and been and what fabulous time we had! I love to decorate, I love all the planning but I get a bit nervous about parties and the actual event - how to entertain the kids etc etc. Hettie has said for almost a year that for her party - which is the first she has had - she wanted a fairy to come to her house. And so it came that Fairy Twinkletoes arrived today in a dress that even made me gasp! It has been quite the build up, with Fairy Twinkletoes sending a personlized note to Hettie some weeks before the party and even speaking to her on the phone a few days ago. It really was the most perfect party I could have imagined - Fairy Twinkletoes had the kids shrieking with delight - absolute pure joy! But the best part, Hettie really believed that a real live fairy who could do real magic had come to visit her and that she (Hettie) did some magic too. It really was priceless! For all you Melbournite Aussies, if are are looking for the ultimate Fairy - Twinkletoes is the one! The whole party was enchanting.

I asked some of Loughie's friends to help me out - they fitted the little fairies out with tiara's, dangle earings, marabou scarves, sparkle nailpolish and sparkle hairspray - I don't know who enjoyed it more...the little girls or the big ones!

And of course I'm sure you are all dying to see a close up of the party do! I knew Hettie woudl be receiving her tiara from Twinkletoes so I wanted something that would work well with that.
So we went with the criss cross corkscrews from the other day and some extra criss cross twists at the back.
Start with 6 piggies - two small ones at the front, two small ones at the nape of the neck, and bigger ones in the middle. Do you corkscrews at the front and attach them into the big middle piggies with elastics. Then take the tiny piggies at the back and twist one and cross it over to the opposite big piggie and repeat - you end up with a nice diamond in the middle of the head. Alternatively you could do the two little piggies at the back as corkscrews. Finish with messy piggies and you have a hairdo fit for a fairy!

So today is the last of the curl chronicals while I take a little break and wait for some new tools to try out to arrive. The methods I've covered so far are
1. Rag curls - which produce just fabulous spirals - really really great. And the best part they are super cheap - they ain't called 'rag' curls for nothing. On the topic of the rag curl, check out these little curly tops here.
2. My 80's hair devices - produce fabulous curls but unfortunately have not been seen since cira 1986.
3. The foam curler - produce a nice soft bouncy curl, not so spiral like but with lots of bounce.
4. The traditional foam roller, again a nice soft curl.
5. The twirlie.

Those of you who are fond of making little worms in hair will know the twistie well. WARNING - these twisties can result in an almost out of control frizz if not approached with caution. I just did one in Hettie's hair - quite a think one - you could easily make it twice this amount of hair. you can see how it came out, almost like a dreadlock. But they are easy to do and all you require is an elastic - soft thick ones work best. Just grab your hair - damp hair as always works best - and start twisting and twisting until the hair doubles up on itself. Once it is well wound up, secure with your thick elastic. Keep doing these all over the head and in the morning - you WILL have curls!

We are just coming to the end of a 2 week school break and we've been trying to get out and about a bit, enjoying the better weather - here in Australia we are coming into a beautiful Spring. On Wednesday we headed down to my Aunt's farm to feed the....ahem Alpacas!

And finally a lovely simple but very effective do. I could have added this to my pigtail challenge. Start with 4 ponies - two bigger ones at the back and two smaller ones at the front. Wet the two front piggies with a water spray and start your corkscrew. Divide the hair in half and twist both halves in one direction. Then wind each of these twists around each other in the opposite direction. Secure with an elastic. Then criss cross your corksrews over and use elastics to secure them into your piggies. Or you can be like me and live on the edge and not secure your corkscrews before you put them into the piggie. Two messy piggies and you are done. I really really like the look of this - it fulfills all my requirements - looks special - ie not your everyday hairstyle. It has a lovely line. And it looks sort of Princessy.

Beehive mark II & Fall - ing in love

Sorry Sorry sorry - I've been away - blame the Olympics! Who can drag themselves away!!! But that does not mean I haven't been busy - you can still sew and watch the television! So....here is my very first Feliz! It is as has been widely reported and über dress - Nancy - you are a superstar! Also those owls...I found the drawings for them here. I am such a fan! You can see more here. Also a today a new beehive interpretation, which is also featured in the auction pictures. This one is becomming a bit of a fav around here - simple but looks cool and I really like the way it extends the hair showing it from right on top of the head right down to the bottom of the braids - a great line.

Tut mir leid, daß es etwas ruhig im Blog gewesen war - ich bin wieder hier. Die olympischen Spiele sind Schuld daran! Aber felißig bin ich trotzdem gewesen. Man kann gleichzeitig nähen und fernsehen oder! Heute mein erstes Feliz! Danke Nancy - das Kleid, ist wie alle sagte, zauberhaft schön. Die Zeicghnungen für die Eulen habe ich hier gefunden. Heute gibt es auch eine neue Frisur. Sieht kompliziert aus aber ist eigentlich sehr einfach. Mehr kann man hier sehen.

So to begin, divide the hair into three section - you can experiment with how big each of these sections are - it works really well with a teensie tiny front section but this time I made the front a bit bigger and that worked too. So you have a front section, a mid section and a back section. Pop the front section in a side pony and the mid section in a pony high up on the head.

The secure the front pony into the middle pony and do a half pull through on the last pass through the elastic. Fan the hair out a bit so you have a nice high beehive-esque look on top of the head.

To end with do two braids in the third section of the hair - pretty cool hey!

Twists with messy piggies

Keeping with the twist theme, here are twists with half way pulled through messy pigggies. Start with a T part, down the centre and then across the head. Then part the back part of the hair and make two high piggies. Then take one half of front section of the hair and twist in inwards. Add it into one of the piggies and secure with an elastic - as you pull the piggie throught the elastic for the last time, only pull it half way through - looks cool hey! Easy fast and cute for school.

Hair styles, Hair fun, being little girls

Kann sein, daß ich davon besessen bin - das passiert mir oft und dagegen kann ich nichts machen. Am Freitag habe ich auf eine Freundin von Hettie aufgepaßt und am Ende des Tages wollten die zwei sich frisieren lassen. Sie wollten sich auch schminken und so weiter und sofort. Also mir hat es richtig Spaß gemacht und die zwei Mädels ebenso. Heute habe ich auch eine neue Frisur probiert.

Okay so I am a liiiitle bit obsessed! However, there is simply nothing to be done about it, just better to go with it. I looked after Hettie's little friend on Friday and we rounded off the day with a totally girlie session -puffy braids AND criss cross piggies - looks pretty cool hey! Hettie meanwhile sported puffy zig zag part braids. And today I thought I'd try out a braided crown that I saw here but ended up going a bit mad and rather liked the crazy result! I started off by parting at the centre and then stood behind Hettie and started braiding on the right hand side across the back of the head. Once I got round near the left ear I began just plaiting without the full french braid and then resumed the french braid once I had plaited enough to go over the head and then braided right down the side and across the back - kinda Heidi gets funky!
